Is the furnace in your Glenview, Illinois, home not working properly? If so, it can impact your family’s comfort and increase your energy bills. Your heater might be blowing cold air because of a malfunctioning thermostat, leaks in your ductwork, or a broken pilot light.
A Malfunctioning Thermostat
An issue with the wiring in your thermostat could keep it from turning on your heater when it starts the fan. You could also have your thermostat set to "Fan" instead of "Heat." Check your thermostat’s settings, and use a separate thermometer to make sure its temperature readings are accurate. Your thermostat should be near the center of your home away from cold outer walls or warm and sunny windows.
Leaks in Your Ductwork
Gaps or leaks in your ductwork can let conditioned air escape while letting cool outdoor air in. As a result, your HVAC system will have to work harder to heat your home, and you’ll experience higher energy bills.
Gaps can also let pests like cockroaches or mice into your ductwork. They can make annoying noises and worsen asthma or allergy symptoms.
A Broken Pilot Light
If you have a gas or oil furnace, your pilot light may have gone out. Check the area around it for dirt or debris, and make sure you have access to plenty of fuel. If you smell gas, or if your pilot light goes out again after you relight it, get help from an expert. If your electric heater won’t come on and there’s no problem with your thermostat or the fan, you may need to have it replaced.
